Responsible Research Evaluation Forum

  • Albuquerque, New Mexico United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

“This two-day, in-person forum hosted by the University of Kentucky, Virginia Tech University, and the International Network of Research Management Societies’ Research Evaluation Group brings together a broad range of experts and practitioners to work toward better, fairer, and more meaningful research evaluation. While traditional evaluation focuses on citation counts or grant income-based metrics, relying on such limited indicators can negatively affect the research ecosystem at higher education institutions by distorting the academic incentive structure, creating unsustainable pressures on researchers, reducing the diversity of the research mission, and potentially compromising research integrity. This forum will present the SCOPE framework as a better way to evaluate research impact and quality. Librarians, researchers, bibliometricians, and research managers will convene to provide formal training in responsible evaluation methods and explore how to use value-led evaluation for strategic research management. To ensure sustainability and a community of practice beyond the project period, the forum will be followed by four virtual sessions throughout the year inviting participants to share how they are piloting the responsible evaluation methods framework at their institutions.”

Research Analytics for research administration

  • Albuquerque, New Mexico United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

“This first-of-its-kind, two-day summit will focus on Research Analytics for research administration. Research Analytics uses data to inform strategic planning in research development and related business processes. While administrators typically work with data capture and management systems, Research Analytics tools can go further, helping an institution set metrics for evaluation and benchmarking; build models; identify trends and gaps; and triangulate with external data to support decision making that promotes growth and optimization of their research enterprise. As applied to research administration, this field is in its infancy—professionals working in this space are often never explicitly trained in data analysis or business intelligence systems…. “

CARL February Call – Learning to be Responsible: From Recognition to Rankings

Bibliometrics and Research Impact Canadian Community of Practice February Call – Learning to be Responsible: From Recognition to Rankings

Registration

The SCOPE framework for research evaluation is a five-stage model for evaluating responsibly. It is a practical step-by-step process designed to help research managers/administrators/librarians, or anyone involved in conducting research evaluations, in planning new evaluations as well as improving existing evaluations. The session will explain the framework and how to apply it to ensure we are evaluating our research organization and researchers in a responsible way. The More Than Our Rank initiative has been developed in response to some of the problematic features and effects of global university rankings. It provides an opportunity for academic institutions to highlight the many and various ways they serve their community and beyond that are not reflected in their various ranking positions. It is an initiative for institutions who are proud of their ranking position but also recognize the limitations of the indicators used and for those who feel that the rankings do not reflect their strengths or institutional mission. The session will explain More Than Our Rank and talk about the international recommendations to join this new initiative as a first step to a more responsible use of international rankings.

We invite those across Canada interested in bibliometrics and research impact indicators, to join this month’s call of the CARL Canadian Bibliometrics and Research Impact (BRI) Community of Practice.

Drs. Erica Conte (Unity Health Toronto) and Baron Wolf (University of Kentucky) are members of the INORMS Research Evaluation Group, which is an international group of research management societies that are working to ensure that research evaluation is meaningful, responsible and effective. During this BRI Community of Practice session, they will outline two major initiatives of the group: 1) the SCOPE framework for responsible research evaluation, and 2) the More Than Our Rank global initiative.

OpenAlex and VOSViewer: Uniting to enable free, easy, and high-quality research analytics [Webinar]

Time zone: EDT Location: Virtual

Registration Link Date: December 14, 2023

Presenters: Kyle Demes & Jason Portenoy

VOSViewer is one of the most widely used bibliometric tools by researchers and librarians across the globe because it performs high-quality analyses and is freely available to all users. However, achieving its full analytical potential has been limited by access to costly databases with restrictive licenses (e.g., Web of Science, Scopus). With the launch of OpenAlex, a completely open and comprehensive bibliometric database, any user across the globe can now freely and easily perform high-quality research analytics, regardless of their institution’s subscriptions. In this webinar, we will review the common use cases of VOSViewer, summarize the coverage of OpenAlex, and demonstrate how combining the two enables unparalleled ease for some of the most common bibliometric analyses (e.g., co-authorship analyses; institution- and country-level network mapping; co-occurence of research topics)

Using OpenAlex for International Intelligence [Webinar]

Time zone: EDT Location: Virtual

Registration Link

Presenters: Kyle Demes & Jason Portenoy

International research collaborations can bring institutions new opportunities for collaborative research and increase the impact of their research. Because of this, internationalization of research is a priority for many Universities around the world. The strategies that Universities develop and implement to achieve their goals of international collaboration require comprehensive data on their research and on the research of all other Universities around the globe. For instance, knowing which institutions globally work on similar research can help identify new partnership opportunities. Identifying existing connections among researchers between those institutions can help drive development opportunities. These data historically have come through costly subscriptions to restricted databases. OpenAlex now provides the data required for international intelligence freely to all users across the globe. In this webinar, we will review common use cases of bibliometric data by international research teams at Universities and how to perform them easily and freely using OpenAlex. For instance: assessing current and potential international collaborators; identifying leading countries and institutions within specific countries on topics of priority to your institutions; and insights into research contributions to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. We will end by showcasing an international intelligence dashboard built off free access to OpenAlex data by a large American research university.

Using OpenAlex to understand your University’s research [Webinar]

Time zone: EDT Location: Virtual

Registration Link

Presenters: Kyle Demes & Jason Portenoy

Because research is disseminated in many ways, often independent of Universities, most institutions don’t have a catalog of the works published by their researchers. This gap has severely constrained the ability of institutions and funders to make informed management decisions, without paying for access to costly third-party databases. OpenAlex is a free, completely open database of the global research ecosystem that can provide research leaders with the data they need about the research by their institution and peers. In this webinar, we will demonstrate how to perform some of the most common analyses of bibliometric data performed by research leaders using OpenAlex—specifically: (1) identifying areas of research strength (2) assessing current and potential research collaborators (3) providing objective evidence of impact and position within a field for reports and grant proposals. We will end by highlighting some of the additional benefits of the OpenAlex model to institutional intelligence, like integration with internal research management systems, external profiling of research(ers), and building derivative tools off the database for custom research intelligence needs.

Introducing OpenAlex: An open and comprehensive catalog of scholarly works, authors, institutions, and more [Webinar]

Time zone: EDT Location: Virtual

Registration Link

Presenters: Kyle Demes & Jason Portenoy

Large databases that index research outputs and associated metadata (scientific knowledge graphs or SKGs) have become critical infrastructure for any research organization. They help researchers find the right papers among millions; they enable scientometrics research; and they provide intelligence to inform decisions at almost every level of research management. However, the leading established SKGs require expensive subscriptions to access and have systematic biases that constrain who has access to these tools and what insights they can provide. That’s why, within less than 2 years of launching, OpenAlex is already seen by bibliometric experts as a foundational tool for high-quality research analytics. In this webinar, we will introduce OpenAlex, the first completely open and comprehensive SKG. Specifically, we will: cover how the open model works for SKGs; highlight major features of OpenAlex specifically in comparison to closed SKGs; review methods for accessing the data; and explore foundations of OpenAlex’s data structure and the use cases it enables. Participants will leave with the foundational knowledge to get started using OpenAlex and resources on where to learn more.

Indexing Tools and Journal Level Indicators

Bibliometrics and Research Impact Canadian Community of Practice September Call – Indexing Tools and Journal Level Indicators

Date: Tuesday, September 12, 2023

Time: 1:00 – 2:30 p.m. ET

Registration | Inscription

We invite those across Canada interested in bibliometrics and research impact indicators, to join this month’s call of the Canadian Bibliometrics and Research Impact (BRI) Community of Practice.

This insightful session will delve into two aspects of academic publishing: Open Alex and the potential to improve the quality of indexing Canadian journals and the significance and use of journal level metrics.

In the first segment, Simon van Bellen, senior research advisor at the non-profit publishing platform Érudit, will introduce how the recent development of OpenAlex may allow for a more complete picture of the Canadian publishing landscape. Canadian research often finds its home in Canadian journals, which according to a recent study are backed by public funds, universities, and learned societies. Exact numbers of publications are unknown as these journals are poorly indexed in common tools for bibliometric analysis. OpenAlex can be used to evaluate the level and quality of indexing of Canadian journals and explore its usefulness for bibliometric analysis.

In the second segment, Christine Brodeur, intelligence analyst for the National Research Council of Canada, will unravel the complex world of journal level indicators. Journal Impact Factor may be a familiar term, but do you understand its definition and how it’s calculated? Are you aware that numerous alternative journal indicators also exist? Are you acquainted with the circumstances under which these indicators should or shouldn't be employed, as well as their limitations? The presentation aims to address these questions and stimulate conversations centred on journal level indicators.

Using VOSviewer to Visualise Patterns in Research Topics & Research Collaboration

How can we tell the story of our research beyond the usual counts and rankings? This session will demonstrate one tool that can be used to visualise patterns in research collaboration and research topics. For this example, we will look at existing collaborative relationships both within a faculty and with outside faculties, institutions or companies. We will also look at topic trends in the publication record with the use of co-occurrence maps of author-assigned keywords associated with our publications.

Invited Speaker: Alison Henry (MLIS) is the Collections Strategies Librarian at the University of Alberta.

Third International Conference on Science & Technology Metrics (STMet 2021)

“Building metrics is the key to science and technology measurement and translating the measures to work better. Metric is not confined to draw numbers and analyze. Selecting a metric depends on synthesizing multiple directions and evidence-based data. Producing benchmarks and standards in science and technology evaluation and implementing them with real data, mark the full-fledged system. Quite recently, we are witnessing the emergence of new metrics-based models aiming to reflect science and technology growth. The proposed Science and Technology Metrics (STMet 2020) conference is concerned with how the use of many metrics may involve the assessment of different aspects of science and technology which are best expressed using different approaches. Besides the standard conference track and the Doctoral Symposium, the STMetrics will host a number of workshops and tutorials related to the theme of the conference. The purpose of the workshops is to provide participants with a friendly, interactive atmosphere for presenting novel ideas and discussing their application of metrics in Science and Technology System. The goal of the tutorials is to enable the participants to familiarise themselves with theoretical as well as practical aspects and application of metrics.” More info www.socio.org.uk/stm

Micropublications – publishing science results piece by piece

  • OpenResearchLondon, Imperial College (map)

A micropublication, also called a Single Figure Publication, is “a peer-reviewed report of findings from a single experiment”. Are micropublications the ultimate in salami slicing – the least publishable unit of research? Or are they an important step on the road to converting research literature into a fully semantic web, a re-imagining of research outputs for the 21st century? Will researchers see micropublications as a quicker and more manageable way to keep informed about new results or as a new fad in publishing that they don’t want to participate in? How do the economics of this new kind of publishing stack up? (Source for event info from: LIS-Bibliometrics list)
